The power of lifting others up

Do not underestimate the ripple effect you create when walking into a room. Your energy and emotions are infectious - contagious even. Whatever you bring to the space, others will feel.

Let me give you an example. In February 2023 I had the pleasure of watching the Buddy Rich Big Band play live at Ronnie Scott's in London. For those who don't know, Buddy is widely considered to be the greatest drummer that ever lived (here is a video to prove his skills. Things get spicy around 3min 41sec).

Sadly, he passed away in 1987 but his band have continued to perform with Buddy's son-in-law - a fine drummer in his own right (I mean he'd have to be!) - taking up the throne.

On this particular night, though, they had a guest drummer sit on for a few tunes - Benny Greb. Benny is also considered to be 'quite the player' (another clip here) but a remarkable thing happened when he took to the kit.

The power of lifting others up

Buddy's band are no slouches - they've been playing at the very highest level for decades. Benny kicks the next song off and the whole band sat up. They literally grew in their seats by two inches, every single one of them. Then there were the smiles... all of them (even the brass section who were piercing their lips to their mouthpieces) were grinning. And the music... WOW!

Benny was demonstrating the power of lifting others up. His playing, energy, musicality... the band were feeding off it and suddenly the gig took off!

You may have no interest in drums, but I am sure you will resonate with memories of when, suddenly, someone else changes your energy for the better. It could be a great speaker, a few kind words from a grateful colleague, a love-filled hug from someone close or just the feeling of warm sun on your face.

These moments can make a huge difference and stay with you for quite some time after.

But here's the thing... when was the last time YOU lifted someone else up - with your words or deeds?

How can you create the kind of ripple effect that Benny did on that night?

Spoiler alert - the ripple goes full circle. You'll elevate yourself too.
