What's the difference between failure and opportunity?

Writer's picture: Mark FranklinMark Franklin

How has the month been for you so far? Twelve weeks down with fifteen to go (that's how January can feel at times). Has your start to 2025 been one of opportunity or failure?

What's the difference between failure and opportunity?

Let me answer that for you:

Failure & Opportunity are actually one and the same thing

The only difference is the point of view, or 'opinion', you give to each experience.

If you apply a factual reflection (i.e. only consider the objective "what has happened"), you are more inclined to take positives from the month so far and, therefore, carry a more optimistic attitude towards your next failure opportunity.

If, however, you allow your Mind Monkeys to distort the experience with emotion ("Well that didn't go well... what must everyone who saw that be thinking?"), the more likely to retreat back into your Comfort Zone and so shield yourself from the successes you deserve.

The Failure vs Opportunity Scales

I invite you to contemplate those choices by placing them on something I like to call "The Failure vs Opportunity Scales". I talk about this more in my new book (publishing next month), but the premise is simple:

  1. Ask yourself how you currently view an experience that you have recently enjoyed / endured.

  2. Plot your response on the most appropriate side of the Failure vs Opportunity Scales (F = Failure, O = Opportunity)

  3. See which way the scales tip

What's the difference between failure and opportunity? Plot your viewpoints on the 'Failure vs Opportunity Scales' - an image of a set of scales. On one side are negative thoughts. On the other are more positive sentiments.

Want to change the balance?

The beauty of failure and opportunity being different sides of the same coin, is that YOU get to flip the coin (by choosing your response or 'opinion'). What's the difference between failure and opportunity? That is up to you. It's that simple.

Except of course it isn't.

You're attempting to flip, what is currently, your default thinking. And that can take a little work...
